Every person has a shy side. Each one of us yearns to be accepted in all aspects of life. Work and social events alike. No one wants to be laughed at or humiliated in front of others. This is especially true of strangers and people of the opposite sex.
Like everything, overcoming shyness can be conquered. Practicing meeting and dealing with people is key. Hiding from shyness will only mask the fear or make it worse. First step of course is admitting that you are shy and that you need and will gain many positive and self improving benefits by overcoming your shyness.
Remember the first day at High School or college? You were nervous. You were shy but after the fourth or fifth class things got better and your nerves eased. That's what this course will teach you. You will start small and grow out of your shyness quickly and effectively.
I tell my students that one of the best ways to overcome shyness is to interact with people that are not out there to judge you. Forget about approaching someone you are romantically interested in. We'll work up to that later. First start with people that you will never see again. You could start at the Mall. I know it sounds silly but it works. Guys you go to the sports store and girls you go to your favorite clothes store.
First step. Put on your Sunday best and get to the store. You are scanning for ways to help people. Open the door for some one in a wheel chair, pick up something for someone that fell on the floor. People will commend you and smile. You have placed yourself in an admirable position.
Take this opportunity to talk with these people for they will judge you positively. A charity or soup kitchen is also a great venue to tackle your shyness. This pools confidence inside you and allows you to move to the next step. You will no longer be petrified talking to a stranger.
Next Step. Approach someone your age and of the opposite sex at your favorite store. Ask them if this shoe or item comes in your size. You will be nervous at first. But there is nothing to worry about. This guy or girl will help you. They don't care about your over shyness.
Do this over and over and your nerves will finally melt away. Increase your conversations making them longer and longer. You will realize that approaching your age,and opposite sex isn't so bad. You see these are controlled environments where you don't have to worried about being laughed at or accepted.
Now, when you are ready, approach a stranger, your age, opposite sex and ask them where the closest ice cream place is (knowing that there is an ice cream store at the mall) Remember this is just about making a small conversation with someone and a little bit of eye contact. These people are not space aliens. They will be friendly. Wow you just approached, on your own, a total stranger, your age and opposite sex.
Congratulations! You have just crushed the first and biggest hurdles to overcome your shyness
