Getting Your Head Round A Mezzanine Floor Can Be Hard - Here Is Some Assistance

By Dirik Hameed

When designing a floor we always recommend using a reputable company. As designing a mezzanine floor is not overly complex but if not done correctly could result in injury or even death. Always therefore seek professional help.

In order for you to install a mezzanine floor you should aim to have at least 5m of clearance in the eves in order for enough head room and avoid the feeling of claustrophobia. For more than one level, you should have the following clearances:

2 floors 7.7m 3 floors 10.4m 4 floors 13.1m of clearance.

The loading of your floor has to be carefully considered to ensure that you don't risk over loading it. There are 4 classes of application for a floor. Each class is as follows, office load design 350kg per square metre, light industrial 480kg per square metre, medium industrial 720kg per square metre, and heavy industrial 960kg per square metre.

Fire ratings depend on the size, location and use of a mezzanine floor within a building. A 1 hour fire rating may be required to the underside of the mezzanine floor. The fire rating is made normally by using fascias to exposed areas of mezzanine floor, and then a suspended ceiling on the underside of the floor.

If you need to move goods about which would be too large for someone to carry safely up and down the stairs but you do have a forklift truck then you can consider the use of a load gate. Load gates permit an opening made in the safety railing but prevent the risk of falling off but still letting a pallet pass through. A wear plate extends out over an area typically 1500mm x 1500mm and extends down over the edge. This may also be advisable if the load gate is going to be very busy to avoid damage to the floor surface. Also useful if the stairs are going be heavily used.

Should you already be using the building that your wishing the floor to be installed into, then planning on moving items early is essential to ensure a quick and smooth install. They will be able to install your floor at lot quicker if the area underneath is open rather than working around things. This is the real world and so is not always doable and so you need to discuss this with your designers to allow solutions to be found.
