When geometrical primitives like lines, curves, and polygons which are based on mathematical equations are used to make images that is called vector illustrations and vector graphics.
Today this technology is used in a variety of different fields. Before 1999 it was used in the United States SAGE air defense system and was considered cutting edge for en route air traffic control.
The technology has other uses than just those used with the defense systems. Graphic and illustration systems implemented throughout the years have been used in the gaming industry. Games such as Asteroids and Space Wars relies heavily on these types of images to run.
When it comes to 3D composition these days almost all of it is done with some form of 2D vector method. Those who put together the technical drawing still revert in some cases to drawing the vectors directly onto paper during the initial phases of the drawing.
With the new imaging form zooming tends to be faster, easier and can be done on an unlimited scale. This is only one of the many advantage of using vector illustrations and graphics instead of older forms like raster graphics.
Changing the pictures is easier with the newer method and they are not as easily degraded. Because of this more realistic images are produced by greater shadowing detail in the 3D applications.
Although there are still some purists that prefer the raster format, most artists generally work with a combination of it and vector these days. This method results in a cleaner more concise final product.
